To celebrate World Book Day 2023 on Thursday 2nd March, we’re revisiting our 2021 Cartridge People study* on how the nation enjoys books. With reading habits changing alongside technology and lifestyles, it’s fascinating to see how Brits engage with literature in the modern day.
What We Learned from Our 2021 World Book Day Reading Habits Study
- 1 in 5 Brits reads a book on a screen or e-reader.
- 41% of people in the UK spent less than an hour a week reading or listening to books.
- 11% of 18 – 34 year olds reported reading more than 14 hours a week.
- 33% said they were reading more than they were in February 2020.
- 1 in 10 people aged 18-44 preferred audiobooks to traditional reading.
- Over 75% of women preferred physical books over digital or audio formats.
Digital vs, Traditional Reading
While digital formats like e-readers and audiobooks are gaining popularity, it’s clear that many people still value the experience of reading a physical book. In particular, women were more likely to opt for print over digital, indicating a strong emotional connection to the tactile experience of reading.
